Use teeny tiny seed lights (like Tim's if you can get them but there are many options available to us, msg me for details) - on the base of the lantern is a notch to fit the wiring, so your lantern will sit flat on its surface while in use. Colour the lights with ink or cellophane to create warm or spooky effects.
String them up along a window or stand one alone in the dark ... collect these amazing little lamps and use however you wish! Enjoy :)
