Begin With An Idea and See What Happens

Begin With An Idea and See What Happens

Time... there's just not enough in the day for all the stuff I'm not going to do.

With Dina by my side (on Youtube) to remind me that less is more, I began my art journal page with one idea and it ended up nothing like how I planned. This prompted me to use the quote by Pablo Picasso that says "I begin with an idea, and then it becomes something else".

These pages were created inside my Dina Wakley MEdia watercolour journal using Dina Wakley MEdia's Chroma Transparencies "Typed Quotes", stamps "Let it Fly" and stencil "Pointy Fence".

Like Dina's Ledger Collage Sheets, the 'Typed Quotes' transparencies are full of thoughts, inspiration and wise quotes. I tried to keep them easily seen, however, my love of paint took over!

The above is a closeup of the transparency tipped in page, showing stamped birds over the lines of printed phrases.

How these pages were created ...

First I folded a Chroma Transparency sheet so it would fit in my book without cutting off the words. Using scissors, I cut along the edge in a hexagon shape following the pattern printed in the background behind the phrases.

I sprayed Dylusions Ink Spray 'Calypso Teal' across the page (along the centre horizontally) then sprayed with water to encourage the colour to blend. Any puddles were dabbed off using paper towel to revel a beautiful light blue wash - then I let it dry.

Next, a spattering of Dylusions Shimmer Spray 'Blue Lagoon' was added in 4 areas (below) then sprayed with water, dried it a bit with the heat tool and dabbed off the puddles.

Listening to rock music is great for spraying ink, shaking up the bottles in time to the best is so good... shaketty shake while bopping!

After I'd shaken up the Dylusions Ink Spray 'White Linen' for half a song and my blue background was dry, I lay the Dina Wakley MEdia stencil 'Pointy Fence' on the page and sprayed white ink over the area, leaving it for a 5-6 seconds to settle before carefully lifting the stencil. I repeated this on the right hand side, then placed the wet stencil onto the page in the centre (wet side down), pressing gently over the top with the paper rag.

Next, I stamped a flying flock of birds in StazOn Pigment Ink Pad Snowflake (white permanent ink) over the back of the transparency page.

After accidentally dropping the transparency sheet onto the wet journal page, I decided I needed even more blue splatter! As you do! lol

So I dropped the transparency onto a puddle of Dina Wakley Gloss Medium (Legit (blue) and white), left for a second then lifted carefully ... it looked so very cool. I put it aside to dry and then dabbed my book into the leftover puddle on the glass mat :)

More shaketty music fun, this time with Dina's Glossy Mediums 'Sunshine' and 'White'... then splattery fun over my page. Yellow in two corners, white in the other.

Using the Sunshine Glossy, I added yellow splatters to the transparency and gently placed the Pointy Fence stencil over the top. After dabbing the back of the stencil with my paper rag, I lifted it then placed it wet side down onto the page.

Onto the smooth side of Tim Holtz Distress Watercolour Heavystock paper using black Archival Ink Pad, I stamped out the larger birds from Dina's stamp set 'Let it Fly'. I cut them out using my fabulous Tim Holtz Tonic Studios Recoil Snips (very sharp 5" scissors). I used the same designs to stamp out a flock of birds over the blue background in the book.

The transparency was attached to my book along the spine using adhesive tape.

After playing with the flippy page for a minute, I used the bone scorer with a ruler to create a new creaseline and pressed it so I had a flat page to stamp on.

Next ...

Inking up the peaceful face stamp from Dina's 'Let it Fly' set with 'Piano Black' StazOn Pigment Ink Pad, I printed the face onto the transparency page. Once dry, I used a paintbrush to dabble Dina Wakley acrylic paint 'Watery' and 'Sky' around, then added dozens of spotty dots around using black gesso with the end of the paintbrush.

The handwriting was drawn on using a broad white Sharpie paint pen, then once dry, outlined using an extra fine black Posca paint pen.

More splatter was required, yellow first then white, over the black spotty hair, doodled marks in the letters of 'idea!', then green, yellow and white paint pens used to enhance her eyes.

Tim Holtz 'Worn Lipstick' woodless watercolour pencil was used wet to smoosh rouge on her cheeks, extra birds flew onto all the pages, stamped with black and white StazOn Pigment ink pads.

Over the flippy transparency page, I stamped Dina's tall bear from 'Regal Bears' using StazOn, and coloured her in with white paint pen, adding a crown in black paint pen.

The quote about time was from Dyan Reaveley's Dylusions Bigger Back Chat stickers, while the word time was handdrawn with paint pens, first in white then outlined in black.

Thanks for reading my crafty blog! I hope it has helped you smile and inspires you to create art using a few of your favourite things!

Happy Arty Days!
